Two-factor authentication (2FA) for off-campus testing

FSU affiliates are now required to use two-factor authentication (2FA) when accessing major university systems including the main FSU sign-in page, FSU email, Canvas, and other applications. While FSU’s main campus testing center and the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) Exam Lab are omitted from this requirement, off-campus testing facilities must use 2FA.
2FA may present challenges for any students required to take proctored exams at a remote testing site, but the Information Technology Services (ITS) Service Desk can issue one-time bypass codes to access Canvas and other university systems without immediate access to a phone.

How to request a bypass code

If you’re an FSU student who’s scheduled to take a proctored exam at an off-campus proctoring site, please follow the instructions below.

1. You may be required to schedule an appointment with your remote proctoring site to take the exam. Be sure to forewarn them about the 2FA requirement to prevent any confusion on exam day.
2. A few days before your exam, contact the ITS Service Desk to retrieve the bypass code. The agent will ask for your phone number to speak with you directly or to schedule a Zoom meeting to verify your identity and registered device. Once verified, the agent will provide a one-time bypass code you can use to log into the testing computer at the remote proctoring site.
3. We recommend you write the code on a piece of paper that the proctor may allow you to bring inside the testing room. The paper can be discarded after you have successfully logged into your Canvas account. Note: You may select the option to remember your login information on the testing machine for 30 days in case you are kicked out of Canvas during the exam.
